Welcome to Leaders for Tomorrow, an exciting new four-year program at the University of Maryland. The program began in fall 2004 with the Class of 2008.

Leadership, Scholarship, and Service ....

These are the core values of Leaders for Tomorrow (LFT). The program will provide a select group of talented and committed University of Maryland students with special experiences that enrich their education and broaden and deepen their skills. LFT students will be prepared for competitive opportunities after they graduate: prestigious national scholarships like the Rhodes and Fulbright, challenging jobs, or and excellent graduate and professional programs.

The first group of 14 diverse, energetic, and talented students has been selected and will begin meeting in September.

Benefits: LFT students will be paid a stipend to conduct research during the summer after their first year at the University of Maryland. They will receive guidance from the LFT Director, the Assistant, and a faculty mentor in their field. They will meet regularly as a group and experience special events, trips, speakers, and service opportunities.

Expectations: LFT students will participate consistently in scholarship, leadership, and service.

This means that every semester they will enroll in challenging and interesting classes and perhaps do additional research on their own. They will also be part of groups (of their choice) that have service missions; and they will strive to be campus leaders of one kind or another. (“Leadership" does not necessarily mean holding an official office; there are many ways to inspire and motivate others.)

The first semester: Last fall, LFT students discussed the challenges they faced as they pursue sscholarship, leadership, and service. They also learned about important national or global issues by attending and discussing special events such as speeches, seminars, performances, and exhibitions.

LFT students had opportunities to share some of their passionate interests with the rest of the LFT group.

The second semester: This spring, each LFT student will complete a research project on some aspect of our community: Prince George's County, MD. The results will be posted for the use of the community on the Prince George's Information Commons website.

freshman summer: The LFT class of 2008 has decided to live in campus housing during the summer of 2005 so that they can complete more intensive and ambitious community research projects, also for the Prince George's Information Commons.

The Director of LFT is Dr. Peter Levine from the University's School of Public Policy. (See his website and blog for more information; or email him at plevine@umd.edu).
